Who this dive site suits
Works for mixed-level groups - the route can usually be adapted to include a shallower zone for beginners and a deeper plan for experienced divers.
Dive route profile
Shaab Ruhr Umm Gamar is a long reef just north of Umm Gamar island. The dive usually drops onto the plateau at 14-18 metres and follows the wall that drops to 30+ metres. Several small caves and coral heads break the wall, and the shallow plateau on the return is thick with table corals and anthias.
Marine life you may encounter
Pelagic action is the main attraction - schooling jacks, tuna, and occasional reef sharks in the blue. Napoleon wrasse and large groupers patrol the wall. The shallow plateau holds turtles and dense clouds of anthias for safety stops.
Best season to dive this site
Late spring to early autumn for calmest seas. The exposed northern position means winter wind often cancels access.
Typical conditions
Visibility 25 to 35 metres. Current can be moderate to strong along the wall and runs roughly parallel to it. Drift dives are common here when conditions allow.
Planning and practical notes
Diving Star confirms the dive plan on the morning of departure based on wind direction, current and the certification level of divers on board. Two dives per day is standard for daily diving, with a lunch break on board between dives. Equipment rental is EUR 20 per day for certified divers who are not travelling with their own set.
Practical diving tips
Start deep, finish shallow. Use the wall as your reference throughout - separation in the blue is harder to recover from than on compact reefs.
