What divers usually notice

Who this dive site suits

Works for mixed-level groups - the route can usually be adapted to include a shallower zone for beginners and a deeper plan for experienced divers.

Dive route profile

Careless Reef is named for two prominent pinnacles that rise from around 25 metres up to 5 metres below the surface. The dive usually drops onto the sandy saddle between the pinnacles at 14 to 18 metres, circles one or both towers, and returns across a coral garden plateau at 8 to 14 metres. The vertical sides of the pinnacles are dense with soft corals and fans, and the blue water on either flank is where pelagic action happens.

Marine life you may encounter

Careless is known for grey reef sharks and occasional hammerheads in the deeper blue, especially early morning. Moray eels (including the large giant moray) sit in the pinnacle crevices. Schooling barracuda, jacks and tuna are reliable mid-water visitors, and turtles feed on the shallow plateau. The soft coral density means photographers often stay on the pinnacle flanks for close-focus work.

Best season to dive this site

Summer and early autumn deliver the best chance of pelagic sightings and the warmest water. Visibility is strong year-round when conditions cooperate, but this site needs calm seas so winter north-wind days often push it off the plan.

Typical conditions

Visibility typically 25 to 35 metres. Current is variable and can be notable on the pinnacle flanks. Because of the open-water position and the depth of the saddle, this is classed as a route for divers who can manage depth discipline and gas planning without prompting.

Planning and practical notes

Diving Star confirms the dive plan on the morning of departure based on wind direction, current and the certification level of divers on board. Two dives per day is standard for daily diving, with a lunch break on board between dives. Equipment rental is EUR 20 per day for certified divers who are not travelling with their own set.

Practical diving tips

Start deep, finish shallow. The plateau safety stop usually has more life than the pinnacle tops and is the best place to watch the reef sharks transit through. Carry a surface marker buoy - separation on a pinnacle dive means a lot of blue water if you end up off-structure.
