What divers usually notice

Who this dive site suits

Works for mixed-level groups - the route can usually be adapted to include a shallower zone for beginners and a deeper plan for experienced divers.

Dive route profile

Fanous West is the sheltered side of the Fanous reef system. Depths stay between 5 and 16 metres, with a sloping coral garden rather than a sharp wall. The route hugs the reef edge, with sandy lanes between coral heads perfect for spotting bottom-dwelling life.

Marine life you may encounter

Dense shallow reef fish - anthias clouds, surgeonfish, butterflyfish, and parrotfish. Blue-spotted stingrays on the sand, occasional turtles, and lionfish tucked under overhangs.

Best season to dive this site

Year-round. The sheltered orientation makes this one of the most reliably diveable sites even when wind picks up.

Typical conditions

Visibility 15 to 25 metres. Current is very light. Surface conditions are typically calm, which is why this site is a favourite for intro dives and newly certified divers.

Planning and practical notes

Diving Star confirms the dive plan on the morning of departure based on wind direction, current and the certification level of divers on board. Two dives per day is standard for daily diving, with a lunch break on board between dives. Equipment rental is EUR 20 per day for certified divers who are not travelling with their own set.

Practical diving tips

A great site for buoyancy practice close to the reef. Keep some reserve for a slow shallow finish - the top of the reef is where the concentration of fish peaks.
